Today we received an e-mail regarding a Wilson High School student who was hit by a car on the way to school. Apparently a school official told the student that she would be better off if she hadn't ridden her bike to school.
How great is that?
Not too long ago it seemed like it was safe to ride to school. I rode my bike to school, as did a lot of my friends. I would have to get there early or the bike rack would fill up. There wasn't a need for programs such as Safe Routes to School... the safe route was the one I rode my bike on.
Did you ride your bike to school when you were a kid?

i rode my bike to school as a kid and in college. i remember having to convince my parents to let me ride to grade school because they were nervous for my safety. i was never injured. except maybe my back from all the freakin books in my bag.
I ride my bike to school everyday and a lot of my neighbors do too.
When I was in grammar school I rode for about a year but then my bike was stolen.
I think kids need to learn about proper use first and sadly, experiences such as what you described or what I had are oftentimes the only way that they do.
